The Gabriel Project
The Gabriel Project is a ministry of the Archdiocese of Denver that provides help to pregnant women in need. It can be described as a Good Samaritan approach that involves a network of churches working together to provide spiritual, emotional, and material support to the woman and her family.
The Catholic Church community responds in a loving, unconditional, non-judgmental manner to the women. This love is a witness to the community of the infinite and healing love of God. A trained volunteer called an Angel reaches out with love to the new mother. The Gabriel Angel is a parish member who takes a specific interest in the pregnant mother and with Christian presence and friendship, walks with her through the difficult times she may be facing. Many of the things we can help with are clothing, baby items, diapers, health care referral, adoption referral, friendship and prayer. When necessary, we can also refer those in need to other community resources and public assistance programs.
Training to become an Angel takes place several times a year by the Director of the Gabriel Project for the Archdiocese of Denver. A background check is required.
The Gabriel Project opened the first Gabriel House in 2009 at 1341 Oneida St. next door to St. James Catholic Parish in east Denver. It provides a location who women and families on a walk in basis during the week (Wednesday and Fridays). Other Gabriel Houses will be opened throughout the Denver Archdiocese.
